Local health officials have confirmed at least 12 measles cases linked to Ave Maria University in Collier County, marking one of the first significant outbreaks in the area in nearly a decade.
According to reports, the outbreak began in late January and rapidly expanded over a weekend, with students exhibiting typical measles symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rash. Public health teams from the Florida Department of Health have been deployed to campus to support contact tracing and containment efforts.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can spread easily through coughing and sneezing, and can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. Health officials say even a few cases can signal broader community risk if people are not immune.

Access Local Testing & Immunity Evaluation
South Health, located in the heart of Ave Maria, is offering measles PCR testing with rapid results, typically available within 24 hours. Individuals exhibiting symptoms or who have been exposed can be tested quickly to confirm active infection and receive timely guidance.
In addition to testing, South Health can perform titer testing to check immunity levels for people unsure if they’re protected against measles. “Knowing whether you have immunity helps determine if a booster is necessary,” says Anthony J. Musingo PA-C of South Health.
Cost and Insurance Coverage
South Health accepts all major insurances, and many plans cover testing, titer checks, and follow ups at no additional cost to patients. There is no need to pay out of pocket when services are covered.
Symptom Support and Follow-Up Care
For individuals who test positive or are experiencing measles-like symptoms, South Health provides comprehensive symptom management, including follow-up care, medical advice, and prescriptions when appropriate. Patients are encouraged to contact their primary care provider after their visit to coordinate ongoing care.
Stay Informed and Protect Your Community
Health officials continue to monitor the situation as more information becomes available. Those with symptoms or concerned about exposure are urged to seek testing and consult with healthcare professionals. Early detection and vaccination not only protect individuals but also help prevent wider spread in the community.
